1st Intermediate Period (2195 B.C.- 2066 B.C.)
Includes the 7th through 11a Dynasties. The dates of any king’s rule are subjective, as rules were counted by regal years, not by era dating)
Following the very long reign of Pepy II (2nd to last king of 6th D), there seems to have been a rapid decline in central power, manifested in a succession of brief reigns, known as the 7th/8th Dynasty. This dynasty continued to reign at Memphis, but the power of the southern provincial governors grew rapidly. Ultimately, the country split with the 9th/10th D reigning from Herakleopolis and the 11th at Thebes. A civil war presaged forcible reunification under the southern 11th D.

**Major Events:
The first Intermediate Period witnessed a splintering of power, possibly the result of a failure of the Nile flood and consequent famine and disorder. The 1st IP ended when civil war brought unity under the 11st Dynasty, the first of the three houses that comprise the Middle Kingdom.

**Misc. everyday living facts:

**Technology:
**Language & Writing:
Transition to Middle Egyptian, which lasts through the Middle Kingdom. Early on in Egyptian history, a distinct handwritten version of the hieroglyphic script developed, known today as hieratic. In its early phases, hieratic was little more than a simplification of the underlying signs. But by the Middle and New Kingsdoms, it took on various distinctive attributes. Hieratic script was used for a vast range of religious and domestic purposes (on papyri, stone, pottery).
Literature included decrees and biographies.
**Monuments/Art:
The civil unrest and changing government meant that large building projects were not finished, or not even begun. A pyramid from the 7th/8th D is unfinished and no larger than a queen’s from a previous era. Of the 9th/10th, there is only one tomb known of, meaning even the names of the rulers have been lost in history.
